Are You Afraid to Die?

Death happens to all of us, to good and bad people. The fear of death has imprisoned some because they don’t know what comes after death. There are some who give up their lives for what they believe. What you believe before death can affect how you live your life. You don’t have to be afraid.

Not My Will, But Yours Be Done!
By Jose Luna

Imagine you are standing on a track, and there is a freight train coming your way, imagine that you can see that train coming at high speed, and that you know that when it gets to you it is going to hit you hard, but it will not kill you instantly, but instead is going to drag you underneath against the dirt, ripping away your skin and your flesh, and you will be tumbling left and right, slowly feeling the horrible pain, the torture, as the train keeps going and you can do nothing about it. You know this will happen, but you cannot get out of the way. What would you hold in your heart at a moment like that? What would be your thoughts? What would be your prayer?

Jesus was kneeling at Gethsemane, with his face to the ground, He was in intense prayer, for He knew what was coming, He knew all the graphic details of the hours that were before Him, and He knew He had to endure it. Being in His very nature God, He had foreseen the whip and the thorns and the nails and the spear and the insults, and the humiliation, but most of all, He had foreseen the rejection from the only one that at that moment mattered to him, He had seen the separation and the face of the father turned away from Him.

"My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death" He said, (Mark 14:34).
"And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground," (Luke 22:44).

(Hematidrosis (also called hematohidrosis) is a very rare condition in which a human being sweats blood. It may occur when a person is suffering extreme levels of stress, for example, facing his or her own death (Referenced from Wikipedia).

We could not possibly comprehend the state of mind and behavior of a person in such circumstances, and Jesus could have perfectly walked away, He could have just decided, I am not going to be put through this, and simply go with his disciples elsewhere out of the reach of the mob that was coming to get him, but He understood that the only way to get to the other side was to walk through that valley of shadows, He knew that unless that freight train came and hit him, and dragged him along underneath, unless He got beaten and tortured and unless His blood was shed all over the streets of Jerusalem, and unless those nails were hammered through His hands and feet, and unless he endured those hours of agony, there would not be redemption for the world, there would not be an atonement, there would not be a clean slate, only condemnation and eternal damnation for the world.

"Yet not my will but yours be done" (Luke 22:42).

I do not believe we have the capacity to assimilate such circumstances, and I can almost certainly affirm that any of us would have got up and walked away. Yet History teaches us how Christians used to sing hymns as the streets of Rome were lit up with their burning bodies in the times of Nero. We also read often of those living in the red zones and those missionaries who walk in harms way to serve our Lord and bring the gospel to those nations. We often read of the imprisonments and murders, and abuses in many nations of the world. These are people like you and me, except they are willing to stand in front of a freight train, trusting that God will derail it or change its direction. And we often hear the miracles in those nations as the power of God move in extraordinary ways and against all odds bringing relief and hope and salvation, bringing light where there was only darkness.

Just last August, ten Christian missionaries were killed in Afghanistan, among them six Americans, a Briton and a German, they were killed allegedly for trying to convert muslins to Christianity.

Persecution today is rampant; it is more dangerous to preach the gospel today in most places in the world than it was in the time of the apostles. And many men and women are ready and willing to give their lives for the love of Jesus. Many are willing to let that freight train run them over, even if it implies anguish and suffering, ripping their skin and tearing their flesh out.

We were called to be Missionaries, we are clearly instructed by the Lord before his ascension to go and make disciples of all nations. And whether we become missionaries in our own backyard, or ten thousand miles away from home, we ought to be willing to risk our comfort and leisure, and stand in front of that freight train.

We ought to be willing to tell the Lord "not my will, but yours be done" for we know that not a single hair in our head will fall off if it is not His will, and no matter where we are or what we do, when that freight train comes, we are going to be hit. And whether we live or die, we live for the Lord and we die for the Lord.

May God's will prevail in your life under all circumstances.
